June 2019 Thread Blog
We've had a few queries about the official distance of the Thread since it went to 3 laps. Interestingly, some fitness trackers are inaccurately measuring running distance, according to research from the consumer watchdog Which? It tested 118 trackers using a treadmill to complete the distance of a marathon - 26.2 miles (42km). It found that the least reliable underestimated the distance by 10.8 miles – meaning the researcher actually ran 37 miles. The most accurate, over-estimating the distance by 1%.
In January 2019 researchers at Aberystwyth University also found that all the trackers they tested overestimated the number of calories burned during activity. (Gulp!) The tests had found a number of models from big-name brands that can’t be trusted when it comes to measuring distance, so before you buy, make sure you do your research to find a model that you can rely on and do trust THQ - we used a measuring wheel!
So, now that's cleared up, to the business for today......and what an exciting finish at the front end. Newcomer Sam Moakes smashed the course record in a time of 15:30, leaving Zak Hodgkinson and Mike Blair (no tortoises themselves) in 2nd and 3rd. And our first lady back was Poppy Cordingley-Lynn - a fantastic effort and her first Thread victory.
Special mention to Ewan Ironmonger for completing the full 5Km urged on by Alison Pye and to our sole mates for their continued support to new runners.
While we are in the thanks arena, as ever, hearty cheer to our marshals Roger and Ranald on such a miserable day for sterling work and to the generosity of all the Threaders, contributing £69.70 to Derbyshire Air Ambulance.
See you next month where we close the 6th year of the Thread.
