Well, we don’t like to dwell on the weather but this morning was probably the wettest Thread on record. Fortunately, the monsoon didn’t really start until everyone was on the start line so we were blessed with 117 undeterred runners.
The diminished powers within Thread HQ had to work for their coffee, being greeted and treated to a great turnout of ‘virgin’ threaders. Amongst them were a number on Betty’s hen party, who clearly had other things on their mind and took the racing far too lightly. Also our friends at Fidler Taylor had amassed a team turnout to swell the numbers in aid of Derbyshire Air Ambulance who benefit from today’s proceeds, a whopping £134.67, as this months nominated charity.
Hopefully the rain won’t put them off coming again and a really great thank you from Simon at FT for all who made such a great effort. There was the other odd test for HQ in the form of Paul Keetley who FORGOT HIS WRIST BAND - after dutifully being issued another band, THQ thought he got off too light and Keetley twas then posted to marshall duties as punishment…….be warned threaders!
At the sharp end, the rain didn’t seem to slow the times and it was Andy Bryan who came home 1st in 18.25.
Another inspired Personal Best from Elspeth Grant saw her take an impressive second spot in 18.29 pipping Mike Blair, in his new shiny trainers.
A final thank you to the soggy but tireless band of marshalls included THQ new grandson, Ben and a surprising number of spectators. See you all at the next Whitworth Thread Saturday August 13th - don’t forget you wristbands!
